By Maria Lewis. Giving your teenage daughter a copy of the Joy Of Sex might seem like a controversial parenting move. But back in the seventies things were a bit more open-minded, or at least they appear that way on Puberty Blues. I hated it.

Puberty Blues - Movie Reviews
Puberty Blues is a Australian coming-of-age film directed by Bruce Beresford. The film is based on the novel Puberty Blues , by Gabrielle Carey and Kathy Lette , which is a protofeminist teen novel about two year-old girls from the middle class Sutherland Shire in Sydney. The girls attempt to create a popular social status by ingratiating themselves with the " Greenhill gang" of surfers , who have a careless attitude toward casual sex, drugs and alcohol over the course of one Sydney summer. For censorship reasons, in the film their age was increased to Much of the content of the novel appears in the film, with several passages of text recounted by the film's protagonist Debbie Nell Schofield in a voice-over narration. The film closely follows the story and character trajectory of the novel. Some of the novel's characters are composites in the film.

She is portrayed by Ashleigh Cummings. Debbie starts off as an innocent young girl, living a conventional lifestyle at home and spending time with her best friend Sue Knight. Debbie attends school and her and Sue have a plan to get into the Greenhill Gang, much to the reluctance of Vicki and Cheryl, the two main girls of the gang. You could see Debbie as a high spirited and kind hearted girl, who is fiercely loyal to her best friend Sue and like any young girl seeking out the perfect boyfriend. However as the show progresses Debbie becomes more rebellious after falling in love with Gary Hennessy and being accepted into the gang she also becomes more resistant to follow the rules that her mother constantly tries to enforce on her.
